Petite Models Should Be Petite: December Poll

Last month, we asked readers: “What should be the maximum height for a PETITE MODEL modelling for a PETITE LINE?” I was not surprised that an overwhelming number of you – 73.4% – said that petite models should actually be petite (5’4″ or below).  Some allowed a one inch leeway (after all, regular runway models are taller than average height), with 19% of you choosing 5’5″.  3.8% of you chose 5’6″ as the maximum height, though nobody chose 5’7″1.3% chose 5’8″ and 2.5% of you chose “there should never be any petite models.”  I included that last option because I *KNOW* there are some fashionistas/fashion bloggers out there who don’t believe in specialty sizing (or don’t consider it “fashion”).  I guess they’ll have to figure out what to do if petite-exclusive lines become big.

What do you think of the results? Better yet, have you ever shopped petite-exclusive lines?

  • I’m 5’6″, 125lbs and I shop in the Petites section of most brands.  Until I ran across blogs about Petite sizing, I suffered in Regular sizing hell. Regular sizing clothes were ill fitting, baggy and too long. So my favorite Petites brands are Ann Taylor, Loft, and Banana Republic. From pants to shirts, I try on the Petite sizes before Regular sizes.

    • You don’t find petites too short? Most people between 5’3″ and 5’6″ say they fall into the in between category, where neither size fits.

      • Petite sizing usually fits just right on me. I wear a size 6 Petite for pants/jeans and size Small to Medium Petite in shirts at Ann Taylor and Loft. For Regular sizing at AT/Loft, I would wear a Small or sometimes XSmall. However Regular sizing tends to have longer sleeves and longer lengths making clothes look so bunchy and baggy on me. With Petite sizing, I rarely have to alter anything. The pants and shirts lengths hit just right.

I think being Petite not only is a height but a type of build to your body.

        • Helen,

I think that’s true to some respect, but tall people (over 5’8″), even those who are small-framed won’t be able to fit into petites. Generally, petite sizing is not only slimmer-fit, but also shorter. Petite pants usually have inseams between 29″ and 31″ with a shorter rise, and tops are cut shorter as well. Based on proportions, petite sizes generally are cut to fit people between 5’1 1/2″ and 5’3″. That’s why I’m having trouble figuring out how someone who is average height can be “petite” all over – unless, of course, you have a very long neck and head.

Do you find that waists are a little off on both petite and regular?

  • Skyroxy

I am short, but I have long legs, so even though I should be in the petites, I can’t buy pants there…

    • You must be petite on top then!  Do you buy tops from the petite section?

  • Hi Cynthia,

I have a long torso, short legs, so my mom says. My inseam is 31.

Yes there is a sizing difference in the waist at a size 6. Petites tend to be just right for me, with the shorter inseam. Regulars usually for me are looser, but the inseam is longer making me always have to hem my pants by 2 or more inches. My AT loft skinny jeans are regular size 6, and are  loose, I have to pull my pants up all the time! Petite sizing does vary from shirt to shirt, pants to pants, and brand to brand.

If I buy a skirt from Juicy Couture, I’ll be sure to buy a size 8 or medium. Shirts that I buy tend to be tunics or longer pieces that cover up to my hips or a little below. I believe that’s how Petite tops at a size Small or Medium still fit me depending on cut and style.

  • Hi Cynthia! I came across your blog from SPGs and wanted to say hi since I’m fairly new to the petite blogger community. Thanks for sharing this poll and I look forward to reading your future posts!
